The city of Mt. Sterling is governed by Mayor Gary Williamson who is elected to a four year term. He resides over an eight member council, all of whom hold a two year term. The City Council meets the third Tuesday of every month at City Hall at 7:00 P.M..

The Montgomery County government is run by County Judge Executive, B. D. Wilson, who holds office for a four year term. He presides over a four member fiscal court. All Meetings of the fiscal court are open to the public.
